Choosing a plan
A bill credit is a fixed amount taken off your bill automatically when your usage reaches a set level in a billing cycle, such as $75 at 1,000 kWh. If you use less than that amount, the credit doesn't apply that month, so check your typical usage before choosing a credit plan.
Advertised rates are usually shown at one usage level, often 1,000 kWh. Credits, base charges, and minimum-usage fees can make that same plan cost more at 500 or 2,000 kWh. Compare the estimated monthly bill at the usage closest to yours, not just the rate.
A fixed rate locks your energy price for the length of your contract, so your rate won't rise in a hot summer. A variable rate can change each month with the market. It has no contract, but it doesn't protect you from price spikes.
Texas homes often use twice as much electricity in July and August as in spring or fall, mostly from air conditioning. Plans with usage thresholds, like bill credits, can behave differently in mild months than in peak summer.
Service and billing
Enter your address, choose a plan, and enroll. Reliant handles the switch with your current provider, and there's no interruption to your power. Check whether your current contract has a cancellation fee before switching.
Enroll with your new address and choose your move-in date. If you already have Reliant, you can transfer your plan to your new Texas address.
Most Texas homes have a smart meter, so service can often start the same day or next day when you enroll before the daily cutoff.
Maybe. A soft credit check during enrollment, which doesn't affect your credit score, decides whether a refundable deposit is needed. You'll see the exact amount before you confirm.
Fixed-rate plans have a cancellation fee listed on each plan. It's waived if you move and provide proof of your new address.
Outages are handled by your local utility, such as Oncor or CenterPoint, which owns the poles and wires. Report outages to them directly. Reliant can help you find the right number and sends outage alerts when available.
You get one monthly bill from Reliant that includes your energy charges and your local utility's delivery charges. You can choose paperless billing and AutoPay, and track your bill in the Reliant app.
